In Community, missions, Ventura

You never know where God is going to lead you. That is certainly true for former missionary Patti Downs. Patti and her husband Dale work at The City Center on Thompson Blvd in mid-town Ventura. Patti is a kind and giving woman who truly embodies a servant’s heart. As I heard Patti’s story, I was in awe. Patti and Dale served as missionaries in Brazil, where their main focus was pastoral care. Twenty years after retiring from missionary work, God called them out of retirement and back to Brazil, to continue the same work. Retiring from work in Brazil a second time, they moved back Stateside to Virginia to be closer to their family. Over the summer of 2018, Patti and Dale got a call from Jim Duran, the pastor at The City Center, who shared what was going on there and asked if they would prayerfully consider working there. Patti and Dale realized that The City Center was where God wanted them.

God has blessed The Center in many ways since their arrival. They have gone from having one case manager to three! Patti’s hopes for The Center involve practical changes and upgrades, such as redesigning The Center’s laundry room.

I asked Patti if there were ways for other people to serve there. She pointed me to The City Center’s website: http://thecitycenter.org/ where you can apply to be a mentor. You can also donate household items, such as nice dishes and flatware.

I loved learning more about Patti and Dale and their work at The Center, and I plan to get more involved there myself. I hope this blog post has also inspired you, the reader. – Aafje Adkins
