When many people think of weekends at ENCOUNTER, Clare Rice’s smiling face and personable touch is what comes to mind. Clare joined the team eight years ago as the Director of Care and Recovery. As our Care Pastor, Clare has been able to touch the lives of many individuals and families as they walked through some of their most difficult life experiences. Her role later expanded to include shepherding Women’s Groups, and she has been pivotal in raising up and encouraging female leaders at ENCOUNTER. She and her husband, Dan, have been married for twelve years. They are parents to nine-year-old Eric, a F1 race car fanatic and who loves history, Pokémon and maps, as well as five-year-old twins, Emmett, a charming and funny Lego collector, and Eleanor, a party-loving girl who enjoys swimming, running at the beach, and making art. A border collie mix named Elsie rounds out their family. Clare is finishing her last month at ENCOUNTER, as her family will be leaving Ventura in the beginning of April to start a new adventure in Indianapolis where she accepted a role at a church called The Creek.
1. What’s your ideal day off look like?
Coffee or walk with a friend – preferably on the beach. Reading a good book – preferably on the beach. Swimming at the beach. Eating tacos with Dan on the beach for lunch then having a family movie night – snuggled together in our jammies.
2. What is one book that has impacted you personally this past year?
Dare to Lead by Brene Brown. I actually finished it in the Fall of 2018, but read it over again this past year. It has shaped how I approach all different kinds of relationships in my life.
3. How would you describe your personality?
Well, I’m sure others might answer differently, haha, but you asked me. I am enthusiastic, cheerful, creative and fun. I love to laugh. I’m a big feeler – I feel ALL the feels, ALL THE TIME. I’m also very moody and cranky. If you’ve known me for any length of time, even just one day, you’ve probably seen all these sides (and more).
4. What is one Scripture passage that feels very personal to you?
Right now, in this season, I am living and breathing Colossians 1:17: He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
5. What is your favorite dessert?
I love a good cheese plate, and I tend to gravitate towards friends who make amazing ones. Our family avoids dairy, and I miss cheese the most.
6. Do you have a secret skill or talent?
If you have leftover food, I can wrap it in foil and make it look like an animal. My specialties are crabs, bunnies and whales. This was my big takeaway from being a server at Gladstone’s in Malibu.
7. What’s one thing in particular you’re looking forward to in the next few months at ENCOUNTER?
My family and I may be moving on from ENCOUNTER, but we will always consider it one of our church homes. We will be following ENCOUNTER’s journey and praying along with you. As for our family, I’m looking forward to seeing what God has in store for us in Indy. We just bought a home there, and we can’t wait to explore the area. We hope you’ll come visit! This is a hard season ahead, but an exciting season. I feel expectant. God never ceases to amaze me!
