In Community, missions, Serving, Ventura, Volunteers

When I began writing for the ENCOUNTER blog, I did not know where God would lead me. When Clare asked me to be a contributor, I said “yes!” and wrote my first blog about the City Center Transitional Living Facility. In my blog post interview with Patti Downs, the City Center on-site manager, she mentioned her desire for a reading program for the children. Without hesitation I told her I would love to help her get one started! I thought I would be assisting, but God had a different idea in mind for me. Instead of simply being a support, I was asked to put a literacy program together myself and give a presentation to the City Center residences on the importance of reading to their children. Through giving up my insecurities and fears to God and letting Him lead me, He not only directed the vision and the plans, but He also brought my partner and new friend Jessica, into the picture. Together we came up with The Little Learn and Create Club (LLC) for the children at the center.

Every Saturday between 3:00 – 4:15 pm, we read the children a story, explore the Scriptures and end with a snack and fun art project. Jessica and I have been encouraged by the generosity of others through the donation of supplies and service of volunteers. And we have room on our team if you want to experience the way that God can work on your heart as you pour it out for others. – Aafje Adkins
