In Community, Ventura, Women

When you hear the name “Lighthouse” you think of a tall light guiding ships to safely to shore. At Lighthouse for Women and Children, run by Ventura County Rescue Mission, that’s what this ministry offers: guidance and hope.

I was privileged to take a tour of the facility located in Oxnard with the lovely Melanie. Lighthouse is a shelter for women and children that offers life recovery to women who struggle with addiction, are homeless, or need a safe haven from domestic violence.

Melanie showed me around their facilities, which feature multiple dorm rooms, an outdoor play area for the kids, a kitchen, living areas and bathrooms that accommodate the women and their children.

As I was being shown around Melanie talked to me about the shelter’s current needs. The biggest needs of the shelter were items that most people don’t think to donate. While clothes are greatly appreciated, they have a greater need for disposable diapers in all sizes and underwear for the women. Because many incoming women lack access to basic hygiene, lice treatment shampoo is a huge need. When supplies are depleted, they have to turn women away, which is heartbreaking. It is easy to order these items online and have them shipped directly to the shelter at 150 N. Hayes Avenue, Oxnard, CA 93030 – or consider visiting them so you can see the great work the Lighthouse is doing as a beacon of light and a place of safe harbor for women in need.
